How can psychological testing be helpful?

Individuals may undergo psychological assessment for a variety of reasons:
  • To identify a profile of strengths and challenges to support development and/or academic functioning
  • To aid in diagnosis and treatment planning
  • To obtain a measure of cognitive (intellectual) potential for school admissions and/or highly capable programs
  • To update accommodations for the college level and beyond (including standardized and/or licensing exams)

Psychological testing can help determine if an individual's symptoms are related to neurodevelopmental differences:
  • Learning Disabilities (Reading/Dyslexia, Written Expression/Dysgraphia, Math/Dyscalculia)
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Intellectual Disability
  • Neuropsychological processes:
    • attention and executive functioning (e.g., planning, organization, inhibition, flexibility)
    • learning and memory
    • processing speed
    • language
    • visual-motor integration
  • Anxiety and Depression

What does an evaluation include?

Dr. Julie's assessment process includes the following:
  • Initial Intake Session/Clinical Interview
  • Testing Sessions with current objective assessment measures (typically one to three sessions)
  • Record Review (school reports, previous evaluations, relevant medical records)
  • Consultation with teachers and/or other care providers
  • School Observation (when applicable)
  • Feedback Conference to explain results of the evaluation and discuss recommendations for next steps
  • Comprehensive Written Report

Developmental Evaluations

Early identification of children with neurodevelopmental delays and disabilities is critical for their development. Dr. Julie assesses children between the ages of three and six years in the areas of cognition, communication, social/emotional skills, adaptive behaviors, and sensory/motor skills. Information regarding your child's developmental profile and recommendations for education and intervention services are provided. Dr. Julie is trained to administer the ADOS-II and uses current objective measures and questionnaires.

Cognitive/Admissions Testing

Brief, focused cognitive (intelligence) assessment may be helpful for a variety of purposes including admission to private/independent schools, entrance into highly capable programs, appeals for highly capable programs, or early entrance to kindergarten. As schools vary in their requirements for these purposes, in some cases academic or additional assessments being required, each evaluation is tailored to your needs.

Comprehensive Evaluations

For individuals six years and older a comprehensive evaluation can identify underlying contributions to an individual's strengths and challenges, determine diagnosis, and provide detailed recommendations for intervention, as well as home, school, and community support. Evaluations are tailored based on the needs of the individual and typically include measures of cognitive ability, academic achievement, neuropsychological processes, and social/emotional/behavioral assessments.

Psychoeducational Evaluations

When greater focus on academic functioning is required for individuals six years and older, a psychoeducational evaluation can identify learning and attention disorders and provide detailed recommendations specifically tailored to the individual's needs. Goals of psychoeducational testing include:
  • Educational planning for private and public schools including learning support plans, 504 plans, and IEPs.
  • Standardized testing accommodations for SAT, ACT, ISEE, graduate entrance exams, and licensing exams.
  • Updated accommodations for college with adult assessments are often required to continue academic support.
Evaluations are tailored based on the needs of the individual and typically include measures of cognitive ability, academic achievement, neuropsychological processes, and social/emotional/behavioral screeners.
